Minutes into US Airways flight 1549 from New York, a flock of birds struck the plane, taking out both engines. With no power, the captain completed a successful emergency ditching in the Hudson River.

How was the captain able to do this?…….with advanced simulation training.

Why: The advanced simulation training that contributed to pilot Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger’s ”miracle on the Hudson” is available in medical editions for the healthcare providers of  Oregon. This preparedness training uses high tech simulators and scenarios to duplicate the medical conditions that are low in frequency of occurrence yet high in risk of life to first responders, doctors, nurses, paramedics, and other healthcare providers in order to save the lives of Oregon residents and visitors.  While the specialized equipment is costly and administering the training in a large, rural state like Oregon is expensive, medical  simulation is documented to improve the quality and safety of healthcare.

The Oregon Simulation Alliance, a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization, is a simulation resource for the healthcare professionals and providers of Oregon.  The OSA combines the strength and expertise of key players from both the healthcare provider and educational communities in Oregon when  selecting members to serve on the  Governing Council.  The Council includes representation from state’s community colleges, public and independent four- year colleges and universities, healthcare provider organizations and medical simulation users.

Mission: The OSA is charged with developing and expanding high tech healthcare simulation capacity statewide for multi-sector, multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary workforce development.  The goal is to integrate simulation capacity into healthcare curricula, train and network simulation faculty and ensure that simulation is both accessible and  affordable for all education and service groups in the state.

How: Medical simulation uses science and technology, specialized equipment and clinical information that emulates real patient-care situations and environments for the purposes of training and evaluation. Without risking harm to the patient or members of the clinical team, medical simulation takes many forms such as interactive computers,  intravenous insertion training arms, and life- like manikins to train healthcare personnel

1. Your donation improves the quality of medical education and training, using simulation for medical, nursing, and other healthcare program students in Oregon.  Donations are applied across the budget to fund tuition assistance for training, to attract and retain meeting speakers and to train instructors who use simulation.  Donations also help to keep subscriber and training fees lower and more in reach for all healthcare professionals.
2. Training tuition and subscription fees do not cover the true cost of programs provided by the Oregon Simulation Alliance.  Your support is vitally important as it helps to close the gap between the tuition and fee revenue and the true cost of the programs provided by the OSA.
3. The subscribers to the OSA benefit from a legacy of early adoption of medical simulation by medical, nursing, and other healthcare educators in Oregon.  Donors recognize that their gift provides the opportunity for nursing students, medical students, and healthcare providers to receive advanced training for clinical decision-making and to be able to respond appropriately to low frequency/high risk events.
4. Donations are tax deductible because of the OSA 501 (c)(3) tax exempt status.  Your gift helps the OSA, and an individual’s total tax liability can be reduced with a contribution.
